The Climb Higher Curriculum at Llangan Primary School

At Llangan Primary School, our Climb Higher Curriculum (Dring yn Uchel, Dring yn Uwch) is built around an inquiry-led approach to learning. We believe children learn best when they are curious, challenged and able to see purpose in what they are learning. Our curriculum is therefore designed to help every child become an ambitious, capable learner; an enterprising, creative contributor; an ethical, informed citizen; and a healthy, confident individual.

Curriculum for Wales

The curriculum for Wales has many component parts which the school pulls together to form its curriculum. A school’s curriculum is, "everything a learner experiences in pursuit of the four purposes. It is not simply what we teach, but how we teach and crucially, why we teach it." (Curriculum for Wales).

Our school's curriculum statement is available below and details how the school approaches the realisation of Curriculum for Wales in our specific, unique context at Llangan Primary School.

Learning Through Inquiry

Each term, pupils engage in a carefully designed inquiry driven by a big, meaningful question. These questions spark curiosity, encourage deep thinking and give learning a clear purpose. Our inquiries are concept-driven, with a golden thread running through each phase of the school, helping children make connections across subjects and over time.

The Inquiry Journey

Learning follows a shared Inquiry Journey, which provides structure while allowing flexibility and creativity:

  • Jump In – an exciting provocation or immersion event to hook interest and ignite curiosity

  • Find Out – questioning, investigation, direct teaching and skill-building

  • Sort Out – organising ideas, making sense of new learning

  • Go Further – applying learning creatively and solving problems

  • Reflect and Act – evaluating learning and considering impact

  • Jump Out – a celebration or authentic outcome to share learning with others

Our Jump In and Jump Out Days are key moments in each inquiry, helping learning feel memorable, purposeful and real.

Purposeful Planning

Teachers and pupils plan learning together using a storyboard approach, breaking each inquiry into clear sections that build knowledge, skills and understanding step by step. This ensures learning is coherent, progressive and meaningful, while giving children a strong sense of ownership over their learning journey.

Learning You Can See

Our curriculum is alive in classrooms, outdoor spaces and across the school community. You can explore examples of current and past inquiries, learning journeys and outcomes on our class pages, where you’ll see how children’s questions, ideas and creativity shape learning every day.

At Llangan, we are proud of a curriculum that is ambitious, inclusive and rooted in our cynefin, helping every child not just to climb high — but to climb higher.
