Friday 7th November

Poetry and poppies!
What a busy and meaningful week we’ve had in Year 6!
In literacy, we’ve been exploring the powerful world of war poetry. After reading and discussing a range of poems, we began crafting our own, writing our first drafts and then evaluating them thoughtfully. The children have shown such maturity and empathy in their writing. Next week, we’ll return to our poems to redraft and refine them, focusing on using figurative language: similes, metaphors, and personification, to make our work even more powerful.
In maths, we’ve been grappling with long division! It’s certainly been a tricky challenge, but the children have shown great determination and perseverance. Please do keep practising at home if you can — every bit of extra effort makes a big difference. Next week, we’ll be moving on to fractions, where we’ll continue to build on our number skills and confidence.
Across the school, we’ve also been busy selling poppies during breaktimes in readiness for Remembrance Day on Tuesday 11th November. The children have taken great pride in supporting this important cause, showing kindness, respect, and community spirit.
In our inquiry lessons, the children have truly taken the reins! They’ve been given the freedom to choose topics that fascinate them and to decide how to present their learning. From factfiles to posters to non-chronological reports, the results have been absolutely fantastic — a real celebration of curiosity and independence.
We also shared our family war stories from the half-term homework task. A huge well done to everyone, and a heartfelt thank you to families for helping the children uncover and share these incredible memories. It was both fascinating and emotional to hear the stories that connect us personally to history and remind us why remembrance is so meaningful.
Next week promises to be another exciting one as we dive into fractions, complete our war poems and learn more about why remembrance is so important.
Have a lovely, restful weekend everyone!
