🦊 Dosbarth Llwynog – Class Blog 16.4.26

A welcome back to school with a jam-packed week of fun and learning.
Welcome back after Easter break and one too many chocolate eggs!
It has been another busy and exciting week in Dosbarth Llwynog!
In Maths, we have been learning to measure, classify and calculate a range of angles. We have explored different types of angles and used protractors carefully to measure them accurately. As part of our learning, we have been developing our reasoning skills, explaining how we know our answers and justifying our thinking using mathematical vocabulary.
In Literacy, we have begun a new and engaging writing journey: newspaper reports. We started by exploring the features of a biased report, discussing how language can influence the reader’s opinion. We then focused on developing our grammar skills, improving our sentence and paragraph writing by using a formal tone, expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials, and both direct and reported speech. We are looking forward to applying these skills in our own writing.
This week, Year 6 have taken on an exciting new responsibility as we begin caring for our school bees 🐝. We have started making checks to the hive alongside our beekeeper, Jonathan, and have also enjoyed taking part in outdoor learning sessions with Mrs Stevens, linking our learning to the natural environment.
On Monday, we took part in a fantastic Garage Band workshop, where we explored creating music digitally. We experimented with different sounds and rhythms and began composing our own pieces. We are excited to continue and complete our work in next week’s final session.
On Friday, we visited Barry Fire Station to take part in the Crucial Crew workshops. Crucial Crew is an annual multi-agency safety education initiative designed to teach essential life skills through interactive, real-life scenarios. The focus is on safety, personal responsibility, and crime prevention. The workshops covered topics like road, water, fire, and internet safety.
In addition, this week has been ‘Wise Up Week’, focusing on health and wellbeing. We have had thoughtful and mature discussions about the changes we experience in Year 6 and beyond. This has included preparing for the transition to comprehensive school, understanding consent and autonomy, and learning about puberty, hygiene and the changes our bodies go through as we grow up.
Da iawn, Dosbarth Llwynog – a fantastic week of learning!
