Amazing Allotments
🌻 Year 3 Blog 🌻
What a wonderful and very busy week we've had in Year 3! We've been learning, creating, planting, and even travelling back in time through our writing!
📚 English Focus – Fronted Adverbials & Creative Writing
This week, we’ve been sharpening our grammar skills by learning all about fronted adverbials. The children have done a fantastic job using them to add detail and flair to their writing. We put these skills into action by writing descriptive pieces about sunflowers and allotments—the creativity and vocabulary on show were brilliant!
🌱 All About Allotments
In our inquiry lessons, we’ve taken inspiration from nature. The children designed their own allotments, thinking carefully about what they would plant and how to arrange their space. We also got our hands dirty by planting tomato plants in the poly tunnel—we can’t wait to watch them grow!
We’ve also started planning our very own instructional leaflets all about planting and gardening. This ties in beautifully with both our writing and science learning.
🎉 VE Day Celebrations
To mark VE Day, we had a special visit from Marion, a local member of the WI, who shared fascinating stories about life during World War II. The children were completely captivated and asked thoughtful questions. Inspired by what we learned, we wrote diary entries imagining we were celebrating Victory in Europe Day in 1945. The empathy and historical understanding the children showed was truly impressive.
🧠Exploring Compass Points in the Allotment
In Year 3, students are learning about compass points and how to use them to find their way around. As part of their geography lessons, they explored an allotment, using north, south, east, and west to give and follow directions. The children enjoyed navigating paths between vegetable beds and greenhouses, using simple maps and their new knowledge to locate different areas.
Have a lovely weekend! See you on Monday for another busy week! 🌻
