Exploring Farming, Friendship, and Fun Outdoors!

What a fantastic start to our new inquiry into farming! The children have jumped right into this topic with curiosity and enthusiasm. We've begun by talking about what we already know about farms and what we’d like to learn. From tractors to animals, there's been no shortage of brilliant questions and thoughtful ideas. It’s been a joy to see their excitement grow as we explore the world of farming together.

A highlight of our week was a special visit to meet Mrs Hughes' chickens! The children were fascinated by these feathered friends—observing their movements, learning about what they eat, and even looking at a few eggs. This hands-on experience really brought our farming topic to life and sparked even more questions and wonder. Mrs Hughes has also asked us to do a special job and look after some eggs for her next week. I wonder if they will hatch?

We also had an amazing “Jump In” day trip to Penllyn Farm, which was a truly memorable experience! The children met pigs, lambs, chickens, and even a miniature Shetland pony. They explored the different textures of real crops, learning how they grow and what they’re used for. One of the biggest highlights was getting to sit on a real tractor—there were lots of proud smiles and excited faces! It was a fantastic way to connect our classroom learning to the real world and deepen the children's understanding of farm life.

We were also very happy to welcome some new friends into our class this week. It’s been lovely to see everyone being so kind and inclusive, helping new classmates settle in and feel part of our community right away.

Our outdoor areas have been buzzing with creativity and play. In the mud kitchen, children have been busy writing and creating their own menus—lots of delicious (and very muddy!) dishes were on offer. The bug hunters have been hard at work exploring under logs and leaves, using magnifying glasses and bug catchers to learn more about the tiny creatures that live in our garden. At the flower shop, children took on the role of florists, gathering nature’s treasures and setting up a bustling little business. Meanwhile, in the construction area, some very impressive farm machinery has been designed and built from blocks, crates, and pipes!

It’s been a week full of learning through play, exploring nature, and developing friendships. We’re so excited to continue our farming inquiry and see where the children’s questions take us next!
