Jump In - Extreme Weathers!
This week, we began an exciting new inquiry topic: “How does weather affect where we live?” Throughout the day, we explored how climate, extreme weather, and human choices are connected to the places we call home.
We used a rich and varied timetable to support our learning, combining video, discussion, practical activities, creativity, and digital skills.
We started the day by diving into important global issues through the BBC documentary Climate Change – The Facts, available on BBC iPlayer. This helped pupils build a strong understanding of climate change, how it is affecting our world, and why it matters to different communities.
Afterwards, we moved into numeracy, where learners applied mathematical skills to real-world weather data. This included interpreting graphs, comparing temperatures, and identifying patterns linked to different climates.
In literacy, pupils explored weather-related vocabulary and developed their writing skills by describing extreme weather events and their impact on people and places.
In the afternoon, pupils took part in coding, where they began to design simple programs linked to weather data and prediction. This helped them understand how technology can be used to model real-world environmental changes.
To finish the day, we moved into art, focusing on the theme of Extreme Weather. Pupils created imaginative and expressive pieces inspired by storms, floods, heatwaves, and wildfires. The artwork reflected both creativity and a growing understanding of how powerful nature can be.
This inquiry is just beginning, and we are excited to see how pupils’ thinking develops. Over the coming weeks, we will continue exploring how weather shapes homes, communities, and ways of life around the world.
This week also marked the beginning of our new writing journey focused on biographies. Pupils will be developing their skills in researching, organising information, and writing in a formal style.
As part of this, we will be writing a biography about inspiring climate activist Vanessa Nakate, learning about her work raising awareness of climate change and her impact on global environmental movements. This links closely with our inquiry and helps pupils understand how individuals can make a difference in the world.
