A Week of Multiplication, Reflection and Discovery!
What a busy and interesting week we've had in Year 5 as we reach the end of our first half-term! It's hard to believe how quickly the weeks have flown by. The children have continued to work hard, challenge themselves and show real enthusiasm for their learning. We've certainly had plenty to think about and explore this week!
Maths – Continuing Our Multiplication Journey!
Our multiplication journey has continued this week, with the children building on the skills and strategies they've been developing over the past few lessons. We've been focusing on using the grid method to multiply 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, practising how to partition numbers, complete calculations and combine our answers accurately.
The children have also been putting their skills to the test by tackling a range of multiplication problems. These activities have encouraged them to think carefully, identify the important information and decide how to approach each challenge. It's been lovely to see their confidence and independence growing as they become more familiar with these methods.
Inquiry – Exploring the Impact of Change on Welsh Communities
This week, our Inquiry learning has taken us on a thoughtful journey through Welsh history, exploring how significant events and changes have shaped the lives of people and their communities.
We learnt about the Aberfan disaster of 1966, a tragic event that had a devastating impact on a Welsh community. The children approached this sensitive subject with maturity, empathy and respect as we explored what happened, the impact on the people of Aberfan and how the disaster continues to be remembered today.
We also continued our investigation into the Industrial Revolution in Wales, looking more closely at the changes it brought to Welsh communities. The children explored the causes of these changes and considered their consequences, including the impact on employment, housing, living conditions and everyday life. We discussed both the positive and negative effects, encouraging the children to think carefully about how industrial development transformed communities across Wales.
It's been encouraging to see the children making connections between different aspects of our Inquiry and developing a deeper understanding of how events in the past have helped shape the Wales we know today.
Happy Half Term!
And just like that, we've reached the end of our first half term! It's been a busy few weeks, filled with new experiences, a residential, challenges and lots of learning.
We’d like to say a big well done to all the children for their hard work, enthusiasm and determination throughout the half-term. They have plenty to be proud of.
We hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break, with time to relax, recharge and spend some lovely moments together as families.
Have a wonderful half-term, everyone! 😊🍁
