Science Homework: Floating and Sinking at Home

Objective: To explore, predict, and explain why some objects float and others sink.

Instructions:

  1. Gather Objects: Collect 4–6 small household items (e.g., a plastic spoon, a coin, a small toy, a cork, a leaf).
  2. Predict: Before putting them in water, guess whether each item will float or sink. You can draw a simple picture of each item and write “float” or “sink” next to it.
  3. Test: Fill a bowl or sink with water. One by one, place your items in the water. What happens?
  4. Record your results in a table or upload your results onto Seesaw.

Sink

It is heavy and dense

  1. Think: Talk to someone at home about why some things float and others sink. Can you think of something you haven’t tested yet that might float?

  1. Dring yn Uwch: Try adding small objects on top of a piece of tin foil. Can you make a “boat” that floats even with weight on it? Draw a picture of your boat and label.
