We have begun revising odd and even numbers this week, using our knowledge of these numbers to problem solve.

*Beginning:

1.Odd or Even Hunt

Look around your home. Find 5 numbers (e.g., house numbers, clocks, books, food packets).
Write them down and circle whether they are odd or even.

Example:
14 → Even

2. True or False?

Which is the correct answer.

  • 8 is odd ☐ / even ☐
  • 13 is odd ☐ / even ☐
  • 20 is odd ☐ / even ☐
  • 17 is odd ☐ / even ☐

3. Problem solving

There are 15 children in a class.
They need to stand in pairs.

  • Will anyone be left without a partner?
  • Is 15 odd or even?
  • How do you know?

Explain your thinking

** Developing:

1.Sort and Explain

Sort these numbers into odd and even:

3, 12, 25, 18, 31, 44, 9, 50

Write how you know.

2.Pattern Investigation

Look at this pattern:

12, 14, 16, 18, __, __

  • What are the next two numbers?
  • Are all the numbers odd or even?
  • What do you notice?

Now try this:

1, 3, 5, 7, __, __

3.Problem Solving

There are some socks in a drawer.
There is an odd number of socks.

Is it possible for all the socks to be paired?
Explain why or why not

*** Mastery:

1.Alway, sometimes or never?

"When you add two even numbers, the answer is even."

Always true / Sometimes true / Never true

Prove it with examples

2.Investigation Challenge

Choose two odd numbers.
Add them together.

What do you notice about the answer?

Try this with at least 3 different pairs of odd numbers.
Write a rule

3.Family Challenge

Can you create your own odd and even puzzle to trick someone at home?
