Llangan Blog – 17th May 2025

What a busy and brilliant week it’s been at Llangan!

Assessment Week
Well done to all our wonderful pupils in Years 2–6 who have worked so hard completing the National Personalised Assessments, alongside our in-house assessments. We know how much effort they've put in—and they definitely deserve a little treat this weekend from mums and dads!

Maths Superstars!
A big shout-out to our Years 5, 6, and 7 pupils who took part in the Rural Vale Schools Maths Challenge Competition this week. This event runs every half term and challenges children to work together to solve tricky maths problems—and they did us proud.

A Buzz in the Air…
Next week, on Tuesday 20th May, we’re welcoming a very special new addition to our school grounds—a bee hive! An area has been made safe with 6-foot fencing to ensure the bees fly up and away to forage, keeping children safe while allowing us to support pollinators in our environment.

As part of our preparations, Year 4 pupils have been helping Jonathan from the Bridgend Beekeepers Association to build the hive from a flatpack kit! They’ve worked alongside Mrs Stevens and loved getting stuck into this hands-on learning experience. The hive will be in place ready for World Bee Day on Tuesday.

A New Arrival in Nursery & Reception
Our youngest learners have welcomed some very fluffy guests! Chicks have hatched this week in Nursery and Reception, following a successful incubation. The eggs were kindly provided by Mrs Hughes (a much-loved retired teacher from our school) and her daughter. The children will be caring for the chicks over the coming weeks as part of their ‘Farm to Fork’ inquiry—learning about farming and the importance of animals in our lives and local area.

Football News
Congratulations to our Years 5 and 6 football team, who represented Llangan brilliantly at the Cowbridge Rotary Club Football Tournament on Friday. Great sportsmanship, determination, and team spirit on show—we’re so proud of you all!

A Message from Pakistan
Thank you to everyone who supported our recent fundraising non-uniform day. Here’s a message from Haseena, who led the effort to support her relative Khana in Pakistan:

“Khana was overwhelmed and in tears when I explained about the fundraising and the generosity of the children and parents at Llangan. Unfortunately, surgery isn’t possible due to her age and health, but we used the funds to make a real difference:

  • £180 on dry food (enough for a year!)

  • £100 on medicines and vitamins

  • £150 saved for a future eye injection

  • £60 on trainers and socks

  • £100 in cash

  • £50 on clothes and a scarf

The total from JustGiving was £449, and I made up the rest myself.

Khana also sent Bombay mix as a thank-you gift for the school—I hope you all enjoyed it! And I hope the biscuits from Pakistan went down well too.”

Looking Ahead to Next Week…

  • Monday 20th May:
Years 5 and 6 head to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. This trip supports our curriculum focus on democracy and how change-makers influence society. Pupils will tour the House of Commons and House of Lords, explore Westminster, and take part in a workshop at the Education Centre about law-making and voting.

  • Tuesday 21st May – World Bee Day:
We officially welcome our bee hive to school and learn about the importance of bees and pollinators. Plaza 3 pupils will also meet a professional beekeeper who makes his living from producing and selling honey.

  • Parent Forum Meetings:
Don’t forget, our next Parent Forum is at 9am in school—come along for a cuppa and a chat.

  • Break the Rules Day – Friday 24th May:
See the advert below from the PTA—it’s going to be a fun one!

Important Dates Coming Up

  • Sports Day: Thursday 12th June

  • Free Parent Course with CAVC: Starting Friday 6th June in school, supporting parents to build confidence in supporting their child’s literacy and numeracy at home.

  • Jump Out Day – Change of Date: Now taking place on Friday 27th June (moved from Thursday due to Y6 Cowbridge transition).

  • KS2 Summer Production: New date – Thursday 10th July. Our Year 3–6 pupils will be performing The Wizard of Oz with shows at 2pm and 5pm.

Thanks as always for your continued support and encouragement. Have a great weekend!
