Castles, Castles, Castles!

What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Year 5!

We kicked off our brand-new inquiry: “Why were castles built, and how did they change Wales?” with a fantastic Jump In Day. Year 4 and Year 5 took part in a friendly competition to see who could build the most impressive classroom castle. The children created stone walls, regal banners, jewellery, and even had guards and spies sneaking between classrooms! It was a truly creative and fun-filled day that got everyone inspired for our new learning journey.

As part of our inquiry, we began researching Welsh castles, focusing on Cardiff Castle, Caerphilly Castle, and Castell Coch. The children wrote persuasive speeches to encourage people to visit these amazing landmarks, using powerful language to show off the history and beauty of our Welsh heritage.

We also explored the Norman invasion of Wales, finding out why castles were first built here and how they changed communities. The children were full of curiosity and thoughtful questions!

Alongside our inquiry, we have started our new writing journey in English, where we will be creating quest stories linked to our castles topic. The class are buzzing with ideas and can’t wait to begin their own adventure tales.

It really has been a busy but brilliant week of learning in Year 5 – and this is only the beginning of our castle quest!
