A Week of Multiplication, History and Teamwork!
What another busy and interesting week we have had in Year 5! The children have been working hard, developing their skills and showing great enthusiasm for their learning.
Maths – Mastering Multiplication!
This week in maths, we have been exploring different strategies for solving multiplication calculations. The children have been practising long multiplication, the grid method and partitioning, developing their confidence and understanding of how each method works. We have encouraged the children to explore the different approaches and discover which strategy they feel most comfortable using. It has been lovely to see them growing in confidence, explaining their reasoning and recognising that there can be more than one way to solve a problem!
Literacy and History – The Windrush Generation
This week, the children have been learning about the Windrush Generation and its important place in British history. We explored the reasons why people travelled from the Caribbean to Britain, the opportunities they hoped to find and the challenges they faced when they arrived. We also discussed the lasting impact of the Windrush Generation and their significant contributions to British society. The children showed great interest in this important topic, asking thoughtful questions and developing their understanding of the experiences of others.
Inquiry – The Industrial Revolution in Merthyr Tydfil
As part of our Inquiry into how the Industrial Revolution changed communities in Wales, we turned our attention to Merthyr Tydfil. We investigated how the town's population changed during the Industrial Revolution, exploring historical data and presenting our findings in graphs. The children then used their interpretation skills to identify patterns, discuss increases and decreases in the population and suggest possible reasons behind these changes. This was a fantastic opportunity to combine our historical knowledge with our numeracy skills, helping us to understand how industrial growth transformed Welsh communities.
PE – Invasion Games and Leadership
In PE, we continued developing our skills through our Invasion Games sessions, focusing on teamwork, communication and movement. This week, we had a special guest leading our warm-up – our very own Jude! Jude confidently explained and organised a game for the class, ensuring everyone was involved and ready for the session ahead. It was wonderful to see him demonstrating such great leadership and communication skills.
A big thank you to Jude – you did a fantastic job!
Another fantastic week of learning, curiosity and teamwork. Well done to everyone for their continued hard work and positive attitudes.
Have a lovely weekend, everyone!
