Year 6 Numeracy Homework - Supermarket Price Challenge
For this homework, you are going to become a smart shopper and compare prices from two different supermarkets.
Choose two supermarkets (for example Tesco and Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons, etc.).
Compare the prices of the following items:
Bread, milk, butter, cheese, apple, bananas, cereal, pasta, chicken, juice, crisps, strawberries, grapes, salmon, potatoes, shampoo, shower gel, washing up liquid, toilet roll, dishwasher tablets, toothpaste.
(You may choose different items if you prefer)
Task 1: Price Comparison
- Record the price of each item from both supermarkets.
- Calculate the total cost of all items from each supermarket.
- Work out:
- Which supermarket is cheaper overall?
- How much cheaper is it?
Part 2: Create a Budget
Imagine you have £70 to spend on your shopping.
Can you:
- Buy all of the items on your list?
- Stay within your budget?
- Work out how much money you have left?
Show your calculations.
Part 3: Thinking Like a Smart Shopper
Answer the following questions:
- Which supermarket offered the best value overall?
- Which item had the biggest price difference?
- Were there any items that were cheaper in one supermarket but more expensive in the other?
- If you wanted to save the most money, would you shop at one supermarket or both? Explain your reasoning.
