Garageband, reasoning and so much more!
This week has been a very busy and productive week in Year 5!
In English, we have continued our writing journey focusing on formal letters. The children have worked incredibly hard to develop their understanding of how to write in a formal tone, and they are now ready to begin writing their own persuasive letters to Mr Adrian Hallmark, the CEO of Aston Martin. In these letters, they will be encouraging him to make Aston Martin more environmentally sustainable.
We have explored a range of important writing skills to support this, including the use of modal verbs (such as should, must, and could), adverbs to strengthen arguments, and relative clauses to add extra detail. The children have also been working on using persuasive language and reliable facts to make their arguments clear and convincing. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they prepare for their final pieces of writing.
In Maths, we have taken part in some challenging reasoning activities linked to electric vehicles, charging points, and travel time. The children were asked to interpret real-life data, compare distances, calculate charging durations, and solve multi-step problems involving time and efficiency. These tasks required careful reading, logical thinking, and resilience when solutions were not immediately obvious.
Although the work was tricky, the class showed excellent perseverance and teamwork. They discussed their ideas, tested different strategies, and explained their reasoning clearly. It was particularly impressive to see how many children were able to justify their answers using mathematical vocabulary and evidence.
In Computing, we have now completed our GarageBand projects inspired by sci-fi films. The children created their own soundtracks, thinking carefully about how to build atmosphere using tempo, layering, and different sound effects to match a futuristic theme.
Once finished, the class took part in a thoughtful evaluation process. Each child reflected on their own project, considering what worked well and what they might improve next time. They also listened to and analysed a peer’s project, offering constructive feedback on elements such as mood, creativity, and how effectively the music matched the sci-fi genre. This was a great opportunity to develop both critical thinking and respectful feedback skills.
Overall, it has been a week full of determination, creativity, and great progress. Well done, Year 5!
